Reconsidering Anna

I used to think her ending was folly,

Make it work with Vronsky or Karenin!

Wake up from doom, smell the scentless holly!

To submit to dispair is wrong, obscene!

Ten years after my doom, I've changed my mind,

I don't feel the "No, don't!" I used to feel,

I still love Anna but I'm now less blind,

I split my own love with an iron wheel.

I'd dived too deeply into Anna's well,

To reemerge as a sane simple friend,

I excised my love like a cancer cell,

To save him and me, we had to end.

Am I sorry?  Je ne regrette rien,

If time were rolled back, I'd do it again.
